If the computer is under warranty, you should not throw its original packages, or else the warranty will be invalidated once you need it. Keep anything that you bought along with the computer such as diskettes, CD-ROMs, program installers, manuals and others in a place where there is an absence of moisture. A dry cabinet with a padlock is the safest place to keep important things such as those recently mentioned.

The computer as well as other hardware attached to it such as printer should be turned off only by the power button. In case of the computer, it should be turned off by the power button on the CPU if not by clicking the Shut Down command in the Start Menu. The printer, on the other hand, should be turned off by pressing the power button on the printer case. You should never attempt turning off everything all at once through a surge protector where the computer and the printer are plugged into.

Always equipped your computer with antivirus software to prevent worms, viruses, and other suspicious software from invade your computer. Installing the antivirus is not enough; it should be updated from time to time as long as the latest version is available.
