Things to Consider Before Buying a Laptop

Purchasing a new laptop can be an intimidating task. There are a lot of available laptops in the market today that offer a wide range of specifications. You can go to a computer sales provider and find yourself confused in the wide array of laptops on display. For what purpose are you going to use the laptop for? Several attributes of laptops such as processing capacity, speed, size, portability, operating systems differ from each model and brand.

Assess what requirement you need for your laptop computer to have. Students and entrepreneurs probably need to access the internet and have document processing capability. Laptops nowadays are wi-fi capable. It is the means of connecting to the wireless internet provider. Other connectivity options such as the Bluetooth may be considered as well.

Laptops are generally divided into four sizes: ultra-portable, thin-and-light, mainstream, and desktop replacement. Ultra portables are more or less 4 pounds light and have around 4 hours power on a single battery charge. They, however, have smaller monitors – 12 inches or less and have slower processing capability. Ultra portables are ideal for students and business persons who need to have their laptops all the time but do not mainly use it for entertainment, gaming, or editing pictures or videos. Thin and light laptops weigh around 5 pounds, have bigger monitors – around 15 inches, and faster processing capability. The same with ultra portables, thin and light laptops are suitable to be carried around everyday but it delivers better for document processing and entertainment. Mainstream laptops are best for those are on a budget. The monitors are around 15 inches and weigh around 6 pounds, processing power is average. Desktop replacements are the king of laptops. The monitors are around 17 to 19 inches and weigh about 7 pounds. The models in this category contain top-of-the-line components that are far better at handling video editing and gaming than the other types of laptops. Since they are packed with powerful components, the desktop replacements do not have a long battery life. They last around 2 hours on batteries.

There are several operating systems you may think about too. Mac OS X (or Leopard) is the most advanced operating system but only runs on Apple computer products which are a bit more expensive. This operating system is most secure but not all applications may run on the Mac OS X. Windows is the standard operating system but is very prone to virus attacks. Linux is less popular but is quick and very customizable. However, not everyone can be at ease with using Linux, since it has a different user interface than Windows.

Determine what other devices you will be working with. A good number of available ports will be very useful. Electronic devices such as memory disks, printers, external memory drives, are designed to connect to Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports. You may also want to have headphone jacks and CD/DVD ROM drives.
